About the Artists:
Soup and Sandwich began as an organ and bassoon duo that was conceived by Rubin and Campbell during their many friendly evenings together at Rubin's home. They have adapted many pieces from their repertoire for piano (including the first two pieces on the program today).
Justin Rubin received his initial musical tutelage from his father, Jerome. Following extensive studies in New York and Arizona, Rubin came to Minnesota to chair the theory and composition program at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he currently holds the position of Professor. He was recently recognized with a Morse-Alumni Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education and was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. As a recipient of a BMI Composition Award and a Fulbright Scholarship, Rubin maintains an active career as a composer and performer specializing in lesser-known repertory. His first CD of original compositions, Nostalgia, was released on the Innova label earlier this year prominently featuring his works for bassoon with Jefferson Campbell as soloist.
Jefferson Campbell has distinguished himself over the last several years as a solo, chamber and orchestral musician on the bassoon. The winner of numerous solo competitions, Jefferson has enjoyed a variety of successes in his career including appearances in Europe, China and across the United States. Recently he performed a widely acclaimed recital at the International Double Reed Society National Conference in Ithaca, New York. Also on the faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he is Assistant Professor and Interim Head of Graduate Studies, he is an avid fan of Nebraska football, and hails from Tennessee.
The United States Air Force Heartland of America Band’s NEW HORIZONS clarinet ensemble is comprised of the squadron's finest clarinet players. Each member brings unique musical abilities to the stage which allows the group to present widely diverse and highly entertaining programs. The group’s repertoire consists of anything from traditional clarinet ensemble literature, polkas and patriotic favorites, to movie medleys and pop favorites by Journey and Taylor Swift.
NEW HORIZONS breaks the traditional boundaries of a “classical clarinet ensemble.” Highly talented as clarinetists in their own right, members of the group are also talented on piano and percussion instruments as well as vocals, vastly expanding the musical possibilities. At home in large auditoriums or in more intimate chamber concert settings, NEW HORIZONS encourages audience interaction throughout their performances. The group brings an unexpected, exciting twist to the traditional concert stage, making each program truly unique.
