ARTIST BIOS:

Seth Custer (b. 1980) is a native of East Grand Forks, MN where he grew up studying the saxophone and piano.  He received his B.M. (2004) in saxophone performance from the University of North Dakota, where he studied saxophone with Elizabeth Rheude and composition with Michael Wittgraf.  He received his M.M. (2006) in composition from Central Michigan University, where he studied with composers David Gillingham and Jose Luis Maurtua.  He is currently a Ph.D. student of composition and theory at the University of Iowa, where he studies with David Gompper, and serves as a teaching assistant in theory and aural skills.  Custer remains active as a performer and teacher, and has recently been commissioned to write works for youth orchestra and saxophone/string quartet.
 
 
Emily Custer is 17 yrs. old, and a home schooled high school junior who resides in rural East Grand Forks, MN.  She began piano lessons at four years of age and voice at age ten. Emily has been actively composing music for nearly 10 years, and has won many regional and national composition awards. On the national level, she has won the John and Margaret Pierson Award and Honorable Mention through the National Federation of Music Clubs.  One of her piano compositions, “Falling Leaves,” won 1st place in the high school division of the Lynn Freeman Olsen Composition Contest, held in June of 2007. Most recently, she placed 1st in the NDFMC Junior Composers Contest with “Stars”, a composition for voice and piano. Emily continues to compose for a variety of media, including voice, brass, woodwinds, and stringed instruments.  Emily also enjoys solo piano performance, and currently studies with Dr. Robert Groves of North Dakota State University. Frequently, she accompanies various musicians in recitals, competitions, and church performances. Following graduation, Emily tentatively plans to attend college to study piano performance and composition.
