ARTIST BIOS:
A baritone from Dallas, Texas,
John Boehr graduated from Baylor University in 2005, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance. Mr. Boehr performed numerous roles with the Baylor Opera Theater, including Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, Giovanni Belleti in Libby Larson’s Barnum’s Bird and Papageno in The Magic Flute. For Palm Beach Opera he played Dandini inLa Cenerentola, Second Priest in The Magic Flute and Sciarrone in Tosca. During the summer of 2005 he sang Masetto in Don Giovanni for the Tanglewood Music Center, and for these last two summers has been a young artist with the Santa Fe Opera. Mr. Boehr continued his Santa Fe association with appearances in the Santa Fe Opera Winter Concert Series and the company’s 2007 spring opera tour of the new work “Trinity.” In February Mr. Boehr made his debut with the Pittsburgh Opera singing Osmano in their production of L’Ormindo. Mr. Boehr has won numerous prizes at vocal competitions sponsored by the Dallas Opera Guild, Palm Beach Opera and the Metropolitan Opera Council Southwest Regional Auditions, among others. He joins the Minnesota Opera this fall as a resident artist, singing Cristiano in A Masked Ball, Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, the Persian Captain in The Fortunes of King Croesus and the Hunter in Rusalka.
Hyewon Kim, a native of Seoul, Korea, began her violin studies at the age of nine. In 2007, She received a Bachelor’s degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she studied with Ian Swensen and where she received the String/Chamber Music Award while remaining active in chamber music under the instruction of Mark Sokol. As a member of the Ulysses String Quartet, Kim traveled all over Canada, performing and competing in various recitals and music festivals. As a result, her quartet received a number of honors and top prizes in the Friends of Chamber Music (junior division), Kiwanis Music Festival, British Columbia Provincials, Canadian Music Competition and National Music Festival among others. In 2003, they were the only junior quartet in residence for 9 weeks at the Banff Centre, where she worked on both solo and chamber music extensively with Lorand Fenyves and collaborated with other faculty and students. The next summer she returned to the Banff Centre, reuniting with her quartet and working closely with Laurence Lesser on chamber music. Kim has performed in masterclasses for Scott St. John, Sylvia Rosenberg and Robert Mann. Other festivals she participated in as a fellow include the Spoleto Festival USA and the Tanglewood Music Center. She is a recipient of the Berneking fellowship at the University of Minnesota where she currently studies with Jorja Fleezanis. Besides playing the violin and listening to music, she enjoys reading science magazines and practicing percussion.
