Artist Bios:

Charles Scarborough graduated in piano performance from Macalaster College, St. Paul.  He has performed in numerous venues around the Twin Cities for years, including the Schubert Club, Thursday Musical, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and others.

Comprised of four musicians from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, the Cantiamo String Quartet is currently in their fourth season.  The ensemble is guided by Thomas Rosenberg, coordinator of chamber music at the University of Minnesota.  Cantiamo has also had the privilege of being coached by renowned pianist Lydia Artymiw, former cellist of the Cleveland String Quartet Paul Katz, the Borromeo String Quartet, and the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award-winning Pacifica Quartet.  The quartet studies and performs a wide variety of standard string quartet literature spanning from the earliest quartets
of Haydn to several string quartets written in the 21st century.  The quartet has a history of working with contemporary composers since its inception, and the quartet continues to promote and perform contemporary music as a standard part of their repertoire.

Elliott Miles McKinley’s music has been performed throughout the United  States, Canada, and Europe. Commissions include those from the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the SOLI Chamber Music Ensemble, the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Music Society, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the Duquesne University Contemporary Ensemble, and the Martinu String Quartet. His works have also been featured on several international festivals, including the Mid-American Center for Music Festival at Bowling Green State University, the Ernest Bloch Festival, and the Olomouc Spring Festival in Olomouc, Czech Republic. McKinley has been the recipient of a BMI Student Composer Award, an ASCAP composition award, a fellowship at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and several grants from Meet the Composer.

Born in 1969, McKinley received a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies and composition from New England Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of  Michigan. Among his principal teachers were John McNiel in jazz performance studies, Malcolm Peyton, George Wilson, Michael Daugherty, and William Bolcom. McKinley will complete a Ph.D. in music composition this spring at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he worked with Alex Lubet, Douglas Geers, Noel Zahler, and David Gompper.
