Artist Bios:
Don Moyer studied voice as a young man and like many others he gave up music as a profession in an attempt to be practical. He spent most of his working life as a social worker. Five years ago his passion for singing was re-ignited and he has been working diligently to live the rest of his life as a singer. Years ago he studied with Dale Moore. He has been a student of Thaxter Cunio at MacPhail School for Music and has been a featured singer in master classes with Gary Briggle, Elizabeth Mannion and others. He has also returned to the stage with performances in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Princess Ida, and Floyd’s Susannah, and has performed with the Minnesota Opera chorus in Rigoletto, Magic Flute and Carmen. Future projects include singing the role of Sarastro in The Magic Flute at Twin Cities Lyric Theater and performing the national anthem at public events.
Sue Ruby hails from the tiny town of Tamarack in northern Minnesota. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's of Music Education, Piano Pedagogy from the University of MN-Duluth and received her Master's of Music from Columbus State University (GA) where she studied with John O’Brien and Betty Anne Diaz. An active member of Phi Beta Kappa and MMTA, Sue is also co-founder and president of the Association of Professional Piano Instructors (APPI). Sue has been a faculty member at MacPhail since 2001 where she teaches private lessons, piano classes, and serves as collaborative pianist for Advanced Voice Lab and the Prelude Program. In her spare time she enjoys meeting with her chamber music cohorts and running half marathons.
Jeffrey R. Marquardt, a senior at Burnsville High School, was born in Burnsville on September 6, 1988. Upon graduation in June, he plans to attend Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, in order to pursue a bachelor's degree in Music Education. Jeff plays bassoon in many ensembles at school, but also continues to develop his skills on saxophone, clarinet, and oboe. He has written three pieces for concert band, all of which he has conducted in concerts. Jeff has immensely enjoyed his Schubert Club apprenticeship and urges any young composer to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
Olivia Rose Muzzy was born on February 27, 1989. She has played the bass for 7 years and has been a member of the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies for 6 years. Olivia also plays and writes music for accordion. She currently is a senior at the Perpich Center for Arts Education where she focuses on music. She is going to continue her music studies in college, with a double major in bass performance and composition.
About the Composer Mentorship Program
This summer, three high-school student composers in the greater Twin Cities area were selected to work with The Schubert Club’s composer-in-residence Edie Hill for the coming academic year.
The mentorship will involve monthly individual sessions, as well as opportunities for the group to get together as a whole. Specific topics and the times of the individual sessions will be arranged jointly, based on each student’s interests and availability, and may deal with: notation, guided listening, composition, and repertoire. Group meetings may include attendance at local performances, rehearsals, and workshops. In addition, a piece by each composer apprentice will be considered for performance on The Schubert Club’s Thursday Courtroom Concert series, and each apprentice will receive a complimentary one-year membership to the American Composers Forum.
Schubert Club composer-in-residence Edie Hill is an award-winning freelance composer whose works have been performed in the U.S., Canada, and throughout Europe. She is a three-time McKnight Composer Fellow, a 1999 Bush Artist Fellow, and has received grants from many organizations, including Chamber Music America. She earned a B.A. from Bennington College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, studying composition with Lloyd Ultan and Libby Larsen.
