The Schubert Club Gamelan Ensemble |
The Schubert Club commissioned a complete slendro-pelog bronze gamelan (Minnesota's first) which arrived in 1995 from Java. This mostly percussion orchestra consists of about fifty instruments constructed and tuned as one unit -- hanging gongs, metallophones, pot gongs in ornately carved racks, xylophones, flutes and a few stringed instruments.
The Schubert Club Gamelan Ensemble is a joint production of the Indonesian Performing Arts Association of Minnesota (IPAAM) and The Schubert Club. This performing ensemble presents one or two major performances annually, which may include shadow puppets or Indonesian dance. In addition, a smaller ensemble is available for educational performances, gamelan demonstrations, and playing for social functions. |

The music of the Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble is rhythmic, melodic, dreamy and hypnotic. Performed on a beautiful set of bronze and teak instruments that includes gongs, metallophones, xylophones, drums, flutes and bowed strings, the rich combination of instruments blends with vocals to create a unique and fascinating soundscape.
Using the music of the gamelan, the Sumunar Dance Ensemble showcases the graceful, traditional dances of Indonesia with colorful costumes and flowing movements. In Indonesia, the word “Sumunar” means a glowing, brilliant light – one that is beautiful and that illuminates and warms the soul.
The concert will include pieces from Sumunar’s new CD as well as traditional Indonesian gamelan music. Additionally, the concert will present recent compositions by Sumunar Artistic Music Director, Joko Sutrisno, with guest artist David Stevshoel on viola. Among the dances to be performed will be a new version of a traditional dance choreographed by Artistic Dance Director, Tri Sutrisno. |
