Artists-in-Residence

The Schubert Club has a special relationship with certain artists whose work we support through commissions, concerts, and other activities.

Current Artists-in-Residence:

Schubert Club Composer-in-Residence Abbie Betinis (b. 1980) is a graduate student in music composition at the University of Minnesota. Originally from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Betinis holds a BA from St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minnesota), where she studied primarily with Peter Hamlin and Mary Ellen Childs. Upon receiving scholarships from the European American Musical Alliance, she spent two summers at La Schola Cantorum and l'Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, France, where she studied harmony and counterpoint in the tradition of Nadia Boulanger with faculty from Juilliard and the Paris Conservatory. Betinis has had master classes with Samuel Adler, Elizabeth Alexander, Libby Larsen, Michel Merlet, and Stephen Paulus, and has received the Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize (2005), an ASCAPlus award (2005), Minnesota Music Educators Association awards, and multiple travel grants and scholarships. Her work has been commissioned by the American Suzuki Foundation, Cantus, the Dale Warland Singers, the Rose Ensemble, the University of Minnesota Men's Choir, and the Young New Yorkers Chorus, among others.

Schubert Club Composer-in-Residence Edie Hill (b. 1962, New York City) has become a nationally acclaimed composer whose vocal and instrumental works are frequently performed both internationally and throughout the United States. Audiences have heard her compositions performed at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, the LA County Museum of Art’s Monday Evening Concert Series, the Walker Art Center, the New York City Downtown Arts Festival, the New Music Chicago Spring Festival, the Mostly Women Composers Festival in New York City and San Antonio, Boston’s Jordan Hall, the New Jersey Cape May Festival and the Schubert Club. Her often-performed choral music has been sung by the Dale Warland Singers, the Rose Ensemble, VocalEssence, Cantus, the a cappella ensemble Dare to Breathe, the Camerata Singers and the Harmonium Choral Society, as well as by collegiate choirs throughout North America.

Belladonna consists of Cléa Galhano (recorder), Margaret Humphrey (baroque violin), Rebecca Humphrey (baroque cello), and Barbara Weiss (harpsichord). Two CDs from the group are available through this website. Folias Festivas, a collection of baroque dance pieces, and Belladonna: Gathering that includes folk melodies from China and 17th century Europe, are both produced on The Schubert Club's Ten Thousand Lakes label.
